Founded by spiritual philosopher and holistic healing pioneer Edgar Cayce in 1930, Atlantic University was the first university to be founded in the City of Virginia Beach. Today, AU offers two master’s degree programs—one in Transpersonal Psychology and the other in Mindful Leadership—as well as graduate and noncredit certificate programs, predominantly through an online platform. The Master of Arts in Transpersonal Psychology has an emphasis on the fundamental oneness of all life, the notion that our essential nature as human beings is spiritual, and that learning must enrich and deepen our relationships to ourselves, to our families and communities, and to the global community. This degree offers five areas of specialization: General Studies, Applied Spirituality, Consciousness, Creativity, and Leadership and Conflict Resolution. The Master of Arts in Mindful Leadership is designed to entwine leadership theory and application with personal and professional growth and the empowering and transformational practice of mindfulness; this degree is a holistic approach to a significant and much needed social science. For those who are not interested in a 36-39 credit hour graduate degree, graduate and noncredit certificate programs are offered.
Few people know that Cayce began Atlantic University even before establishing the nonprofit Association for Research and Enlightenment. Atlantic University’s mission is to provide a high quality education that integrates body, mind, and spirit to help individuals achieve higher human potential and transform their lives, better understand their relationship to all life, and be of profound service to others. The mission of A.R.E. is to create opportunities for profound personal change in body, mind, and spirit through the wisdom found in the Edgar Cayce material.
