Uplifting Film Event Benefits the A.R.E. Prison Outreach Program

Virginia Beach, Va. – Edgar Cayce’s A.R.E. invites you to enjoy a free educational and enlightening night at the movies! On Wednesday, Feb. 13, the A.R.E. hosts the Hampton Roads showing of the moving documentary, Seats at the Table, which follows two disparate groups of students—one from the University of Virginia and one inside a juvenile detention center—brought together to explore personal themes through Russian literary classics. What they learn offers a mind-altering perspective on breaking down stereotypes.

The film begins at 7 p.m., in the A.R.E. Visitor Center at 215 67th Street in Virginia Beach. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. Inspiration is included at no charge! Following the movie, filmmaker Chris Farina (RosaliaFilms.com) talks about the film and then explores the synergies and public impact of prison outreach programs with participants from A.R.E.’s own Prison Outreach program.

The 90-minute documentary depicts a remarkable college course designed by professor Andrew Kaufman to bring together university students and residents of a maximum-security juvenile correctional center through the study of Russian literature. These student-to-student interactions become the catalyst for creating powerful relationships that break down the initial stereotypes many had when the class began. Both groups of students come away transformed by this singular educational experience, empowered to pursue lives of greater purpose and inspired by the discovery of their shared humanity.
