Uplifting Film Event Benefits the A.R.E. Prison Outreach Program
Virginia Beach, Va. – Edgar Cayce’s A.R.E. invites you to enjoy a free educational and enlightening night at the movies! On Wednesday, Feb. 13, the A.R.E. hosts the Hampton Roads showing of the moving documentary, Seats at the Table, which follows two disparate groups of students—one from the University of Virginia and one inside a juvenile detention center—brought together to explore personal themes through Russian literary classics. What they learn offers a mind-altering perspective on breaking down stereotypes.
The film begins at 7 p.m., in the A.R.E. Visitor Center at 215 67th Street in Virginia Beach. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. Inspiration is included at no charge! Following the movie, filmmaker Chris Farina (RosaliaFilms.com) talks about the film and then explores the synergies and public impact of prison outreach programs with participants from A.R.E.’s own Prison Outreach program.
The 90-minute documentary depicts a remarkable college course designed by professor Andrew Kaufman to bring together university students and residents of a maximum-security juvenile correctional center through the study of Russian literature. These student-to-student interactions become the catalyst for creating powerful relationships that break down the initial stereotypes many had when the class began. Both groups of students come away transformed by this singular educational experience, empowered to pursue lives of greater purpose and inspired by the discovery of their shared humanity. For more than 45 years, A.R.E.'s Prison Outreach program has rallied against social stereotypes, providing free spiritual and uplifting books to inmates, chaplains, and prison libraries across the U.S. Each year, over 10,000 adult and juvenile inmates in all 50 states are given hope, inspiration, and the ability to transform their lives—one book at a time. In 2018, the program sent out a record 18,000 books. For information about the A.R.E. Prison Outreach program, to request a free book, donate, or volunteer, visit EdgarCayce.org/prison.
Edgar Cayce founded the non-profit Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.) in 1931, to explore spirituality, holistic health, intuition, dream interpretation, psychic development, reincarnation, and ancient mysteries—all subjects that frequently came up in the more than 14,000 documented psychic readings given by Cayce, who died in 1945. The mission of A.R.E. is simply to create opportunities for profound personal change in body, mind, and spirit through the wisdom found in the Edgar Cayce material. The Virginia Beach headquarters is a popular site for locals and tourists with free daily lectures, a Health Center & Spa, the Cayce/Reilly® School of Massage, an extensive metaphysical library, a meditation garden, a stone labyrinth, and a bookstore and gift shop. The campus is also home to Atlantic University which offers two masters degrees (Transpersonal Psychology and Mindful Leadership) through an online platform, as well as continuing education and certificate programs. Through A.R.E.’s many programs, services, publications, and membership outreach, individuals from all walks of life and religious backgrounds are provided with tools for personal transformation and healing at all levels.
