Discovery of New Edgar Cayce Reading Brings Total Documented to 14,307
Virginia Beach, Va. – Less than a year ago, Jessica Newell, M.A.L.S., made organizational history as the first professional staff archivist of the Edgar Cayce Foundation. Just a few months in the position, Newell has made an unexpected discovery.
“One of my first tasks was to process the Cayce Family Collection, which included records of the Cayce Petroleum Company,” Newell explained. The oil company was started in 1920 by Edgar Cayce and several business partners, including David Kahn. It was Cayce’s hope to fund his work through this venture but due to what Cayce’s own readings suggested was a lack of a shared ideal and purpose with all those involved, the Texas-based venture never tapped “liquid gold.” But during his time in Texas, Cayce gave several readings to people in need—and it is one such previously unknown reading that Newell uncovered among the Cayce Family Collection.
The reading precedes the hiring of Edgar Cayce’s long-time faithful stenographer and secretary, Gladys Davis Turner, who attentively recorded a majority of Cayce’s more than 14,000 readings. Newell theorizes that Kahn was the one who recorded the reading, which is supported by notations from Davis Turner. The person (#4337) who received the lost reading had a second reading of which Davis Turner was aware and that reading had been documented. Number 4337’s newly discovered reading will be added to the existing case file in the Edgar Cayce Foundation’s archive, as well as to the online Cayce Readings database.
“Finding this reading has been one of the highlights of my time so far at the Foundation,” Newell said. “Who knows what might await re-discovery?” Another favorite aspect of her work has been meeting the Cayce family members, colleagues, and friends. “Their voices can be discerned across the years through the archival materials.”
The Edgar Cayce Foundation was chartered by the Commonwealth of Virginia in February 1948, to provide permanent legal and physical custody of historical resources including the Edgar Cayce readings themselves. The Foundation’s charge includes related correspondence and records such as original stenographer notebooks, appointment books, research studies and reports on the readings, indexes and inventories, reports of preservation activities, photographs, sound and video recordings—and so much more. The Edgar Cayce database consists of an astonishing 24 million words.
Most of the Foundation’s archival records are stored in the Don and Nancy deLaski Education Center building on the A.R.E. headquarters campus in Virginia Beach, Va. Sensitive, historical, aging, and fragile materials are protected within the Foundation vault in that building. Private tours of the Edgar Cayce Foundation vault are by appointment only. However, A.R.E.’s Virginia Beach campus is open to the public seven days a week, with many free activities plus a Bookstore & Gift Shop, a metaphysical Library (where the readings can be accessed), a meditation room with a view of the ocean, the A.R.E. Health Center & Spa, and a cafe.
Edgar Cayce founded the non-profit Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.) in 1931, to explore spirituality, holistic health, intuition, dream interpretation, psychic development, reincarnation, and ancient mysteries—all subjects that frequently came up in the more than 14,000 documented psychic readings given by Cayce, who died in 1945. The mission of A.R.E. is simply to help people around the world change their lives for the better through the ideas and information found in the Cayce readings. The Virginia Beach headquarters is a popular site for locals and tourists with free daily lectures, a Health Center & Spa, the Cayce/Reilly® School of Massage, an extensive metaphysical library, a meditation garden, a stone labyrinth, and a bookstore and gift shop. Visitors from around the world come to experience conferences featuring speakers on subjects like ancient mysteries, holistic health, and spiritual development. The campus is also home to Atlantic University, which offers two masters degrees (Transpersonal Studies and Leadership Studies) through an online platform, as well as continuing education and certificate programs. Through A.R.E.’s many programs, services, publications, and membership outreach, individuals from all walks of life and religious backgrounds are provided with tools for personal transformation and healing at all levels—body, mind, and spirit.
