As many of you have heard, a lawsuit has been filed by a number of individuals who say that they experienced inappropriate behavior and even sexual assault at A.R.E. Camp.
We first became aware of these allegations in June 2020 when they were posted on the Camp Facebook page. As even ONE allegation is extremely distressing and completely contrary to everything that the Cayce work stands for, there was an immediate response on behalf of the organization. After reviewing the information, our Board commissioned an experienced and independent outside investigation agency to look into these allegations, and to encourage anyone who experienced harm to come forward. A.R.E. Management contacted everyone who had been to Camp in the last decade providing them an opportunity to report any harm they had experienced to the investigation agency. That same opportunity was repeatedly posted on the Camp’s Facebook page, where the allegations first appeared.
That investigation continues and the Board began receiving interim reports in March 2021. Two Board committees were established in June 2020, one to address any systemic or policy-based changes needed, and the other to review camp personnel. These committees are currently reviewing the investigative reports. We are asking the independent investigators to formulate their recommendations as to any needed changes. We have also retained the independent agency to offer separate, stand-alone, confidential healing and remediation services, of which some former campers have chosen to take advantage. Those who responded were assured of confidentiality by our Board and by the independent investigation agency, and we have kept that promise.
Please note that no Camp activity has occurred since the summer of 2019. None will occur this year, and none will occur until the organization is satisfied that we have addressed ALL concerns.
Sexual assault or assault of any kind is never acceptable. Obviously, we are extremely concerned for anyone who may have experienced harm at Camp. We are extraordinarily distressed by these allegations. The Camp is a Family Camp that focuses on healthy living for body, mind, and spirit. It has been in operation for more than fifty years.
We would appreciate your prayers for the individuals involved as well as for the organization.
Sincerely,
Kevin Todeschi
