Edgar D. Mitchell, ScD
The sixth man to walk on the moon, Dr. Mitchell’s life-changing experience during his Apollo 14 mission later lead him to found the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), which sponsors research into the nature of consciousness. Scientist, test pilot, naval officer, astronaut, author, and lecturer, his extraordinary career personifies humankind’s eternal thrust to widen its horizons as well as its inner soul.
Dr. Mitchell’s rich academic background includes degrees from Carnegie Mellon University and MIT, and honorary doctorates in engineering from New Mexico State University and the University of Akron, and a ScD from Embry-Riddle University. He has received many awards and honors and was a nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005. He is the author of Psychic Exploration and The Way of the Explorer, as well as dozens of articles in both professional and popular periodicals. He has devoted the past four decades to studying human consciousness and psychic and paranormal phenomena in the search for a common ground between science and spirit.
